Artist Bio

Nothing here is meant to be exact. Just felt.
Hi, I’m Alula Lémon, a self-taught abstract impressionist artist based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
My paintings begin with feeling rather than a fixed image. I am drawn to transitions—the movement of light through an environment, the way colours pass from one state into another, and how an inner experience can shift even while we are still inside it.
I have never understood colour as something fixed. An apple is not simply red; it moves through green, yellow, red and brown over the course of its life. A night sky that initially appears black can gradually reveal blues, violets and muted golds when given time and attention. This way of observing the world shapes the way I paint.
Working intuitively, I build my paintings through repeated directional brushstrokes and layers of translucent colour. Each new layer gathers, alters and reveals traces of those beneath it. I do not follow a predetermined map: colour, rhythm and placement are guided by feeling as the work develops. Because of this, no painting can be recreated exactly—even by me. Many of the works also change with their illumination, allowing different colours and depths to emerge as the surrounding light shifts.
My paintings often become water, light, darkness, weather or landscapes that are not entirely known. Within them, I explore places where stillness, courage, tension, wonder and rest can coexist. Although a work may begin with a personal memory or emotion, I do not want to prescribe what another person should see. I hope each painting leaves enough room for viewers to bring their own experiences and perhaps find a little peace, strength or belonging within it.
My current practice continues to explore how colour and light can transform not only what we see, but how a space—and the person within it—can feel.
